New Regulations Implemented for SIM Card Purchases

India’s government is implementing stricter measures to obtain new SIM cards in order to enhance safety and security. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has released two circulars to regulate the usage of SIM cards in the nation. The initial directive pertains to individual users, while the second one focuses on telecom companies such as Airtel and Jio, with the aim of altering the process of SIM card sales. Here is what you should be aware of.

1. Stricter rules for shops

Shops that sell SIM cards need to be more careful. They have to do a background check on the people who work there. If they fail to do so, they can be fined up to ₹10 lakh for each transaction. These rules start on 1 October 2023. Existing stores have until September 30, 2024 to meet these new requirements.

2. Liability of telecom companies

Major telecom companies like Airtel and Jio also need to check the stores that sell their SIM cards. They have to make sure that the shops follow the rules. This is to keep things safe.

3. Police checks in some areas

In certain places like Assam, Kashmir and North East, telecom companies have to check shops with police before allowing them to sell new SIM cards. This additional step increases security.

4. Add confirmation to everyone

When you buy a new SIM card or get a new one because your old one is lost or damaged, you go through a detailed verification process. This process is the same as when getting a new SIM card. Its purpose is to ensure that only the right people can use the SIM cards.

In short, these new rules are meant to make sure SIM cards are safe and prevent fraudsters from getting into the phone. It is an important step to protect the nation and its people. The changes will come into effect soon, so it is important that both telecom companies and users are ready for the new requirements.
